North Carolina Turnpike Authority’s Triangle Expressway Turnpike Freeway Project is this year’s winner of the AASHTO President’s Transportation Award for Highways. The award recognizes individuals or teams who have performed exemplary service that benefits transportation regionally or nationally.

The National Highway Institute (NHI) has announced their award recipients for FY 2011, and three TRAUNER employees received the NHI Instructor of Excellence Award.
This is the third year in a row that Mark Nagata has received this honor. He is joined this year by Brian Furniss and Scott Lowe. The Instructor of Excellence Award is based on teaching at least two sessions and achieving an instructor satisfaction rating of 4.5 or above.
We join NHI in congratulating Mark, Brian, and Scott on their selection to the top tier of NHI instructors and in thanking them for helping to maintain the highest standards of quality in transportation training.
John Unbewust will give a presentation entitled, “Pay Me Now or Pay Me Much More Later” at CMAA’s National Conference and Trade Show. This presentation will address contract language and CM activities that will improve an owner’s project-level conflict resolution track record by resolving conflicts at the lowest level and providing the most cost effective solutions.
CMAA’s 2012 National Conference and Trade Show will be held in Chicago, IL, October 21-23, 2012.
Scott Lowe will give a presentation on Claims and Home Office Overhead at AASHTO’s Subcommittee on Construction Annual Meeting on August 14, 2012.

The December 19, 2011 edition of Engineering News Record features our very own Bill Manginelli, Ted Trauner, and Brian Furniss. The article, “Why Sharing the Float is No Utopia, But Should Be,” discusses different industry opinions on float ownership (a topic we’ve been addressing in our Ideas & Insights).
Bill is quoted several times throughout the article and excerpts from the article, “Why Owners and Contractors Should Share the Float,” which he wrote with Ted and Brian, are also published.

While it doesn’t feel like it was that long ago, John Crane has been with Trauner for 10 years as of November 26, 2011! John has survived two office moves with the Orlando office, the transition from Corel to Microsoft, the days when we had only one dial-up internet line, many late nights at the office, and a constant barrage of jokes and digs about his beloved home state of West Virginia. Through it all, John has been a consistently positive person, always willing to do the little things that give our company and his client’s an elevated chance at success.
Please join us in thanking John for his efforts throughout the last 10 years at Trauner and for being a great asset to our team. We all look forward to AT LEAST the next 10!!
The National Association of Women In Construction’s Greater Orlando Chapter awarded its 2010-2011 Member of the Year award on September 17th. This award is given annually to a member who have gone “above and beyond” to represent NAWIC and the Orlando chapter. We are pleased to announce that TRAUNER’s Cheryl McBride was selected as Member of the Year. Cheryl and the chapter’s Rookie of the Year award winner will now be submitted for the regional competition, which will awarded in May.
Trauner’s Mark Nagata has been selected as one of Building Design + Construction Magazine’s “40 Under 40.”
Building Design + Construction’s “40 Under 40” list highlights 40 of the most remarkable individuals in the architecture, engineering, and construction industries that are under the age of 40. In order to be considered for the list, one must be nominated by submitting a write-up describing the candidate’s strengths and accomplishments. Each nominee is then judged on the following categories: leadership skills, inventiveness, sustained career progress, “people” skills, client relations, academic training, dedication, personal integrity, technical skills, and community outreach. Last year, there were 275 nominations for the list.
Mark was nominated and selected for this list based on his dedication to Trauner and our clients; his industry contributions, including his work on the book Construction Delays, Understanding them Clearly, Analyzing them Correctly, his extensive contributions to AACEI’s Recommended Practice No. 29R-03 for Forensic Schedule Analysis; and his constant desire to better himself and to further his career, among many other things.
Mark and the rest of the “40 Under 40” award winners will be featured in the May 2011 issue of Building Design + Construction. Please join us in congratulating Mark on this outstanding achievement. He definitely deserves it.
Rick Burnham’s excellent article entitled, “Effectively Managing the Challenges of GMP Contracts,” has been published in the Construction Owners Association of America’s magazine Owners Perspective, as a six-page cover story.
The article, which is published in the Spring 2011 issue, describes practices that can lead to problems on GMP contracts, and gives advice on how owners and contractors can manage this type of contract more effectively. Some of the practices Rick mentions in his article are: poor administration of allowance items; waiting to resolve value engineering proposals until after the GMP is agreed to and the contract is signed; lack of a good working definition of what is a “change to the GMP”; and misconceptions regarding contingencies and how to deal with “buyout savings” and “buyout overruns.”
