Geoff Page will be presenting a 2-day NHI Course in Baltimore, MD, titled “Principles and Applications of Highway Construction Specifications,” on May 15th and 16th. The course includes content that highlights the role of specifications as contract documents and tools for assigning risk. Course participants will engage in lessons and practice sessions to identify types of specifications, select the most appropriate type for a given project, and generate an original, effective highway construction specification. On April 12, 2018, Bill Haydt will present an ASCE Webinar, “The Pricing of Delay Costs for Construction Projects.” Bill will give participants the tools they need to determine the true costs of delays for a construction project. In some cases, these costs are straight forward, easily recognized, and easily calculated; however, these costs can sometimes be complicated to determine. Bill will discuss basic concepts, with case studies and real examples, to allow attendees to see how these concepts are actually applied.

The article addresses why the contemporaneous documentation that is created during the life of a construction project is so important. On March 14, 2018, Scott Lowe will present “Calculating the Cost of a Change.” Scott will discuss the misconceptions and uncertainty surrounding the pricing of construction changes. Contractors will learn what they must include to be made whole. Owners will learn what they should pay, and what they shouldn’t pay. CMs, attorneys, and the consultants and accountants that advise them will learn what is needed to accurately and persuasively price a change. Scott’s focus will be on the hard topics – the legitimate damages associated with delay, the real costs of inefficiency, and the balancing concerns when pricing acceleration. He will also review the sometimes controversial areas of unabsorbed home office overhead, interest, and consequential damages.
