On December 11, 2019, Bill Haydt will present an ASCE Webinar “The Pricing of Delay Costs for Construction Projects.” Bill will give participants the tools they need to determine the true costs of delays for a construction project. In some cases, these costs are straight forward, easily recognized, and easily calculated; however, these costs can sometimes be complicated to determine. Bill will discuss basic concepts, with case studies and real examples, to allow attendees to see how these concepts are actually applied.

Bill will present the various ways to document and preserve what occurs during the course of a project, as well as suggestions for making this documentation more fact-focused and effective. Bill also discuss how effective communication and documentation can increase the likelihood of resolving issues in a timely manner, without resorting to litigation.

Geoff Page will be presenting two 2-day NHI Courses in Alaska, titled “Principles and Applications of Highway Construction Specifications,” in Juneau, AK on September 5th and 6th, 2019, and in Fairbanks, AK on September 9th and 10th, 2019.  The courses include content that highlights the role of specifications as contract documents and tools for assigning risk. Course participants will engage in lessons and practice sessions to identify types of specifications, select the most appropriate type for a given project, and generate an original, effective highway construction specification. Emphasis is placed on the use of basic grammar and writing style so that participants can produce correct, consistent, clear, complete, and concise specifications.

On July 17, 2019, Rick Burnham will present “Avoiding the Pitfalls of GMP Contracting.”  This 90-minute Lorman webinar will include an in-depth description and analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of this contracting format, the four phases of work that are typical when working under a GMP format, the components of a GMP and why it is so important to fully understand how each is defined, and the conditions that apply to the payment of each component. You will learn what to do and not do during each of these phases, including administrative burdens placed on each of the parties when using this contracting format, what a change is under a GMP contract, and how it differs from changes under other contracts.
